Wishart State School – Sports & Programs Summary (All Year Levels)

Wishart State School offers a wide variety of sporting programs in 2026, ranging from inclusive clubs to elite representative pathways. School-Wide & Multi-Year Level Programs

  • Sporting Schools Programs:

    Year levels: Prep – Year 6
    Terms: Varies each term
    Open or invitation: Open to all (first 30 to return permission)
    Training: Before, during or after school by sporting organisations and accredited coaches, facilitators or teachers.

  • Cross Country Club (Prep–Year 6):

    Year levels: Prep – Year 6
    Terms: Term 1 & Term 2
    Open or invitation: Open to all (permission note that is sent home)
    Training: Before school by Wishart SS staff. Usually, twice a week with one session open to parents and family members to join.

  • Chess Squad (Years 1–6):

    Year levels: Year 1 – Year 6
    Terms: Term 1–4
    Open or invitation: Open to all, limited spaces (paid enrolment)
    Note: Gardiner Chess program with ability‑grouped coaching and interschool tournaments.

  • Gymnastics Squad (Years 3–6):

    Year levels: Year 3 – Year 6
    Terms: Term 1–4
    Open or invitation: Open to all, register interest with Mr Walker
    Training: Before/after school by Wishart SS staff

Competitive & Representative Squads

These programs often require selection based on performance in school carnivals or specific trials:

  • Cross country Squad:

    Year levels: Prep – Year 6
    Terms: After school cross country carnival → trains Term 1–2
    Open or invitation: Invitation from PE team (based on carnival results)
    Training: Before school by Wishart SS staff
    Competition: Selected runners compete at All Schools State Championships & Relay Championships.

  • Triathlon Squads:

    Year levels: Year 2 – Year 6
    Terms: Term 1
    Open or invitation: Invitation from PE team (based on PE swimming + running performance at school cross country carnival)
    Training: Before school by Wishart SS staff
    Competition: Competes in Queensland Tri Series at Raby Bay.

  • Netball Squads (Years 2–6):

    Year levels: Year 2 – Year 6
    Terms: Term 2 & Term 3
    Open or invitation: Invitation from PE team (based on PE performance Term 1 + club experience)
    Training: Before school by Wishart SS staff
    Competition: Competes in two weekend carnivals, the Metropolitan District Netball Association Club Carnival and the Jimboomba Netball Association Club Carnival

  • Aquathlon Squads:

    Year levels: Year 2 – Year 6
    Terms: Term 3 & Term 4
    Open or invitation: Invitation (based on swimming + running performance at school cross country carnival)
    Training: Before school by Wishart SS staff
    Competition: Competes at Queensland All Schools Aquathlon.

  • Touch Football Squad:

    Year levels: Year 4 – Year 6
    Terms: Term 1–4
    Open or invitation: Trials (Term 3, lunch breaks (no experience required)
    Training: Before/after school by Wishart SS staff
    Competition: Competes at QLD Primary All Schools Championships.

  • Blues Cup Touch Football Squad:

    Year levels: Year 4 – Year 6
    Terms: Term 1–3
    Open or invitation: Trials (club players encouraged)
    Training: Before/after school by Wishart SS staff
    Competition: Senior teams compete in Runcorn SHS Blues Cup.

  • Track and Field Squad:

    Year levels: Students turning 10–12 (Year 4–6)
    Terms: Term 3
    Open or invitation: Invitation (qualifying standards at athletics carnival)
    Training: Before school by Wishart SS staff
    Competition: Competes at Mt Gravatt District 10-19 Track & Field Trials; may progress to Regionals.

  • Swimming Squad:

  • Netball QLD Primary Schools Cup Squad:

Year Level Specific Highlights

  • Prep to Year 1: Focus is on foundational programs like Sporting Schools, Cross Country Club, and (for Year 1) Chess.

  • Years 2 to 3: Students become eligible for specialized squads such as Triathlon, Netball, and Aquathlon.

  • Year 4: Eligibility expands to include Touch Football, Basketball (3x3), and AFL Queensland Primary Schools Cup trials.

  • Year 5: A dedicated Interschool Sport program begins in Semester 2. Students can choose between Volleyball, Basketball, or AFL to play against other local schools.

District & Regional Pathways

For students with exceptional ability (typically ages 11–12), the school facilitates nominations for Mount Gravatt District trials. Successful students can progress to Regional (Metropolitan East), State, and National championships.
